Radiation detectors work based on the interaction of particles with matter.

When a particle passes through a substance, it absorbs all or part of its energy and produces ionization or excitation.

If a particle is charged, its electromagnetic field interacts directly with the orbital electrons of atoms in matter.

In the case of gamma rays or X-rays, there is an intermediate process that occurs with the photoelectric effect, the Compton effect, or the generation of electron pairs that transmit some or all of the energy to the orbital electrons of the substance, and then ionize or excite.

Neutral particles, such as neutrons, that do not have electricity, generate charged particles through a nuclear reaction and then cause ionization or excitation.

Radiation detector is the use of appropriate detection medium as a particle action of the substance, the particle in the detection medium produced by ionization or excitation, into various forms of direct or indirect information that can be accepted by the people's senses.
